Peace Prayers

We need prayer. Prayer is our touchstone with life. Like a familiar pebble we carry in our pocket, prayer's force is a reminder that we are connected with thmiracle of life. Wonder surrounds and cloaks us, like the air we breath and the earth upon which we walk. Wonder is a life force, the beat of our heart, our skin touching the present moment.

We need prayer not to beg or plead. We need prayer to express gratitude for all that is wondrous. We need prayer for hope, but not a hope with expectation to receive. We need prayer to give so that others and this Earth might receive.

Pray often. In the presence of people, plants, forests, water, animals large and small. Offer your heart and mind up as a prayer of gratitude, honor, respect and courtesy. Offer to this world a prayer of reverence - an expression of unconditional love from the heart and soul.

We offer the following assortment of prayers, numerous ones from interfaith traditions. If you would like to contribute a particularly nice peace prayer, please email us at peace@onesanctuary.com.

Many of the following prayers appear on the following website:

Cortesian Prayer of Reverence
by C. Forrest McDowell

"Thou are the most beautiful love that shines deep within my heart.
Manifest Thy presence within me,
as peace, love, joy, wisdom and reverence,
that I may be one with Thee
in all that I think, say and do."

This prayer moves me deeper in peaceful relationship with that which I am viewing, feeling, thinking. I stand before a tree, flower, butterfly, sunset or rainstorm, a child, lover, elder, or cripple. Each one is within me, their essence heightened and acknowledged to a state of beautiful love pouring forth into the chalice of my receiving heart. I ask for their presence within me so that my waking consciousness is reminded that the Divine is within all.

Do not pass through a day without prayer. Give yourself small little islands of grace-moments to embrace wonder and reverence for life. Find your own soul's prayer, or use another's. Let your expression become a natural part of your day, a wakeful state of breathing, loving, honoring. With practice, such wondrous prayer comes easy and feels familiar like a smoothe touchstone in the sanctuary of your pocket.

The Prayer of St Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning, that we are pardoned,
It is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Buddhist Prayer for Peace

May all beings everywhere
plagued with sufferings of body and mind
quickly be freed from their illnesses.
May those frightened cease to be afraid, and may those bound be free.
May the powerless find power, and may people think of befriending one another.
May those who find themselves in trackless, fearful wilderness
— the children, the aged, the unprotected -
be guarded by beneficial celestials,
and may they swiftly attain Buddhahood.

Jewish Prayer for Peace

Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
that we may walk the paths of the Most High.
And we shall beat our swords into ploughshares,
and our spears into pruning hooks.
Nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war any more.
And none shall be afraid,
for the mouth of the Lord of Hosts has spoken.

Muslim Prayer for Peace

In the name of Allah, the beneficent, the merciful.
Praise be to the Lord of the Universe
who has created us and made us into tribes and nations.
That we may know each other, not that we may despise each other.
If the enemy incline towards peace, do thou also incline towards peace,
and trust God, for the Lord is the one that heareth and knoweth all things.
And the servants of God,
Most gracious are those who walk on the Earth in humility,
and when we address them,
we say "Peace."

Sikh Prayer for Peace

God judges us according to our deeds, not the coat that we wear:
that Truth is above everything, but higher still is truthful living.
Know that we attaineth God when we loveth,
and only victory endures in consequences
of which no one is defeated.

Christian Prayer for Peace

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be known as the Children of God.
But I say to you that hear:
love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you , pray for those who abuse you.
To those that strike you on the cheek, offer the other one also,
and from those who take away your cloak, do not withhold your coat as well.
Give to everyone who begs from you,
and of those who take away your goods, do not ask for them again.
And as you wish that others would do to you,
do so to them.

Native American Prayer for Peace

Oh Great Spirit of our Ancestors, I raise my pipe to you.
To your messengers the four winds,
and to Mother Earth who provides for your children.
Give us the wisdom to teach our children to love,
to respect, and to be kind to each other so that they may grow with peace of mind.
Let us learn to share all good things that you provide for us on this Earth.

Native African Prayer for Peace

Almighty God,
the Great Thumb we cannot evade to tie any knot;
the Roaring Thunder that splits mighty trees:
the all-seeing Lord up on high
who sees even the footprints of an antelope on a rock mass here on Earth.
You are the one who does not hesitate to respond to our call.
You are the cornerstone of peace.

Jainist Prayer for Peace

Peace and Universal Love is the essence of the Gospel preached by all Enlightened Ones.
The Lord has preached that equanimity is the Dharma.
Forgive do I creatures all, and let all creatures forgive me.
Unto all have I amity, and unto none enmity.
Know that violence is the root cause of all miseries in the world.
Violence, in fact, is the knot of bondage.
"Do not injure any living being."
This is the eternal, perennial, and unalterable way of spiritual life.
A weapon, howsoever powerful it may be, can always be superseded by a superior one;
but no weapon can, however, be superior to
non-violence and love.

Shinto Prayer for Peace

Although the people living across the ocean surrounding us,
I believe are all our brothers and sisters,
why are there constant troubles in this world?
Why do winds and waves rise in the oceans surrounding us?
I only earnestly wish that the wind will soon puff away
all the clouds which are hanging over the tops of mountains.

Baha'i Prayer for Peace

Be generous in prosperity, and thankful in adversity.
Be fair in judgment, and guarded in thy speech.
Be a lamp unto those who walk in darkness, and a home to the stranger.
Be eyes to the blind, and a guiding light unto the feet of the erring.
Be a breath of life to the body of humankind,
a dew to the soil of the human heart,
and a fruit upon the tree of humility.

May there be peace on Earth.
May the waters be appeasing.

May all beneficent beings bring peace to us.
May thy Vedic Law propagate peace all through the world.
May all things be a source of peace to us.
And may thy peace itself, bestow peace on all
and may that peace come to me also
.

Religious Science Prayer for World Peace

by Dr. Ernest Holmes

The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof.
I know there is but One Mind, which is the mind of God,
in which all people live and move and have their being.
I know there is a divine pattern for humanity
and within this pattern there is infinite harmony and peace, cooperation, unity, and mutual helpfulness.
I know that the mind of humankind, being one with the mind of God,
shall discover the method, the way, and the means best fitted
to permit the flow of Divine Love between individuals and nations.
Thus harmony, peace, cooperation, unity, and mutual helpfulness are experienced by all.
I know there will be a free interchange of ideas, of cultures, of spiritual concepts, of ethics,
of educational systems and scientific discoveries - for all good belongs to all alike.
I know that, because Divine Mind has created us all,
we are bound together in one infinite and perfect unity.
I know that all people and all nations will remain individual but unified
for the common purpose of promoting peace, happiness, harmony, and prosperity.
I know that deep within each person the Divine Pattern of perfect peace is already implanted.
I now declare that in each person and in leaders of thought everywhere
this Divine Pattern moves into action and form,
to the end that all nations and all people will live together
in peace, harmony, and prosperity forever.
And so it is.

Divine Keeper of Prayers

Miasha

Oh Divine Keeper of Prayers:
Doest Thou have in your Heart
a prayer for suffering, loss and grief?
Will you let a mother shed tears over her dying child
without offering her a comforting prayer of compassion?
Shall the world suffer in violence, and Nature in abuse,
without a prayer of relief?

Dear One,
I place my knees on this hallowed Earth,
place my hands over my heart,
place all my selfish wants and needs at Your feet.
I exchange myself for your Prayer of Kindness, Compassion, Hope and Peace.
I exchange my little human self for a prayer for all beings on this planet.

Doest Thou hear my soul call?
Can you share from your Keep a prayer for this world,
in my name,
with my unconditional Love?
